How we run Proxmox
The same automation runs our cloud and our customers' clusters. Here are eight things it does.

Every node update runs like this: monthly, dev first, then staging, then production.
- Everything as code
- Ansible with 70 roles runs 94 environments. CI validates every change, and every merge syncs the inventories to a CMDB.
- Ceph, three times
- Ceph runs with three-way replication and compression. Storage and compute share one cluster; a health check precedes every change.
- HA with rules
- Affinity, anti-affinity and node pinning decide where a VM lands when a node fails.
- Maintenance without downtime
- Drain, live migration and a Ceph health check run before every update. Afterwards we uncordon the node.
- A network zone per customer
- Proxmox SDN gives each customer a VLAN zone. Between management, services, customers and the internet, default deny applies.
- SSO and least privilege
- Every Proxmox cluster uses Entra ID login and a custom operator role with only the rights it needs.
- Staged patching
- We patch monthly: dev first, then staging, then production. Kernels and package versions are pinned, and tickets are generated automatically.
- Monitoring we wrote ourselves
- We wrote Prometheus exporters for Proxmox VE, Proxmox Backup Server and Proxmox Mail Gateway and published them on GitHub.

Why Proxmox
- Open source with enterprise support
- KVM, QEMU, Ceph and ZFS are all open source. The enterprise repository and vendor support come with a subscription, and you do not depend on a vendor roadmap.
- Licensed per socket, not per core
- A subscription counts CPU sockets. CPUs with more cores cost no extra licence, and there are no core minimums or mandatory bundles.
- No partner-programme risk
- Proxmox Server Solutions in Vienna develops Proxmox VE. There are no minimum quantities and no reseller programme that can be cancelled over your head.
- Ceph HA without an extra licence
- Hyperconverged storage is part of Proxmox VE: three-way replication, live migration and failover without a separate SAN or storage licence.

What is Proxmox VE and who is it for?
Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualisation platform based on KVM and LXC with built-in clustering, HA, software-defined networking and Ceph storage. It suits anyone who runs VMs on their own hardware: SMEs, IT service providers, public administrations and cloud providers like us.
Is Proxmox a full replacement for VMware vSphere?
It is not a drop-in replacement. HA, live migration, snapshots and backup are there, and a DRS equivalent arrived with the cluster resource scheduler in 2026. There is no hardware compatibility list. With an operating concept, Proxmox replaces vSphere in the large majority of estates; the remaining gaps are listed in our whitepaper.
What does a Proxmox subscription cost?
Subscriptions are priced per CPU socket and year in four levels: Community, Basic, Standard and Premium. The level changes response times and support hours; the features are the same at every level. We quote them in Swiss francs, together with the operations offer.
Do I need a subscription to run Proxmox?
No, the software is the same without one. A subscription gives you the tested enterprise repository and vendor support. For production we recommend at least Basic; our managed tiers include a subscription.
How does a migration from VMware ESXi work?
Proxmox VE imports VMs directly from ESXi through its import wizard. We inventory the estate, build the target cluster, install VirtIO drivers, move VM by VM with a parallel test phase, and keep a way back until you sign off.
Where does Managed Proxmox VE run?
It runs on Natron Cloud in our Swiss datacenter, on your hardware as Natron Flex Stack, or on a Proxmox cluster you already operate on-premise. In every case you get the same automation and team.
How do you back up Proxmox VMs?
We back up nightly to dedicated Proxmox Backup Servers with deduplication and staggered schedules per customer. Our own exporter monitors backup freshness. Backups are encrypted.
Do you offer 24/7 support for Proxmox?
Our support tiers range from best effort to a 4-hour response at 5x13. Monitoring and alerting run around the clock. Vendor support from Proxmox is included with the subscription; for Premium subscriptions it is available 24/7.
